Porec is an ancient town located on the western coast of the Istria Peninsula. Porec's history dates back to the Prehistory when the first settlers came. Then, this territory was the Roman colony. Many monuments, which tourists can see today, come from that time. The most important attraction of Porec is the 6th – century Euphrasian Basilica which was inscribed into UNESCO's List in 1997. The Basilica is Europe’s finest intact example of Byzantine art. The wall mosaics of biblical scenes can be admired there. Tourists can see the panoramic view over the city from the belfry. In the adjacent Bishop's Palace, you can take part in an exhibition of ancient stone sculptures, religious paintings and the 4th-century mosaics. In Porec, there are other interesting sites such as the 13th-century Gothic Franciscan Church, Romanesque and Baroque buildings or the well-preserved original main streets layout. In close vicinity to Porec, there is located the island of Saint Nicholas. Rich Mediterranean vegetation has allowed to develop organic food production (olives, grapes, wines). Porec is a top tourist destination with good infrastructure. The town offers many activities: cycling, walking, riding, diving, waterskiing, sailing.
