Makarska is a small city on the Adriatic Sea, which is located about 60km southeast of Split, on a horseshoe shaped bay, at the foot of the Biokovo mountains. The first records of settlement date back to the first half of the 4th century, however this area was inhabited since the prehistoric times. Hence many historic monuments can be seen there. Tourists can admire the prehistoric Illyrian artifacts, Roman villas, medieval naval might of Mokro in the Neretva Dukedom, the Turkish walls and the Venetian Baroque town. The 16th-century Franciscan monastery houses a library with numerous books and rare incunabula's and a famous, world known collection of shells. On the Kacic (main) square there is located the 17th-century cathedral church of St. Marko. Much more sights can be visited in Makarska such as the churches of St. Filip and Jakov, the Croatian holy shrine of Vepric located in the natural cave, the Makarska Observatory. This region offers almost 2km-long sandy beach and the magnificent Mount Biokovo. Tourists can roam to villages situated above Makarska where lovely old village architecture can be admired as well as fantastic panoramic views over the sea.
